“Dad, are there really aliens out there somewhere in space?”
“Nobody knows for sure. But scientists have actually tried to think through that possibility using numbers.”
“Using numbers?”
“Yep, there’s something called the ‘Drake Equation.’ It multiplies together things like how many stars are in our galaxy, how many of those have planets, and how many of those planets have the right conditions for life.”
“So did they get an answer?”
“Not an exact one yet, because we don’t know the precise number for each step. But here’s one thing we do know for certain, our galaxy alone has more than a hundred billion stars.”
“A hundred billion?”
“Yep. Wouldn’t it actually be stranger to think that not a single one of those has conditions similar to Earth?”
“Then why haven’t we met any aliens yet?”
“That’s another great question, scientists call it the ‘Fermi Paradox.’ The universe is so vast and so old, so why hasn’t anyone reached out to us yet?”
“What could the reason be?”
“There are several ideas. Maybe the distances are so huge the signals haven’t arrived yet. Maybe we’re searching the wrong way. Or maybe life is far rarer than we think. Nobody knows for sure yet.”
“So could we find out someday?”
“Scientists are still listening for signals from space right now, this very moment. Maybe by the time you’re grown up, we’ll finally know the answer.”
“Our galaxy alone has more than a hundred billion stars. The universe is far too vast to be certain we’re the only life in it.”
