“Dad, is a black hole going to eat the Earth?”

Her dad sets down his fork, a little surprised. “Where’d that come from?”

“I saw a video. It said black holes eat everything. Stars, planets, everything.”

“Okay, first thing, no. Not us, not anytime soon, probably not ever. The nearest black hole is really, really far away.”

“How far?”

“Thousands of light-years. That means even light, the fastest thing there is, would take thousands of years just to get there.”

“So it can’t reach us?”

“Nope. Black holes aren’t like vacuum cleaners sucking up the whole universe. They only pull in stuff that gets really, really close, way closer than anything near us ever will.”

“Then what IS a black hole, actually?”

“It’s what’s left over when a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses in on itself. All that material gets squeezed into something so small and dense that not even light can escape once it gets too close.”

“Not even LIGHT?”

“Not even light. That’s actually why it’s called ‘black’, no light comes back out, so we can’t see it directly. We only know it’s there by how it bends light and pulls at things nearby.”

She chews a little slower, thinking. “So it’s not being hungry. It’s just… really strong gravity.”

“Exactly. It’s not looking for you. It’s not looking for anything. It’s just sitting there, being incredibly heavy.”

“That’s less scary.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I don’t like something wanting to eat us. But something just existing, way far away, minding its own business? That’s fine.”

Her dad smiles, picking his fork back up. “Minding its own business. I like that.”

Now It’s Your Turn

Find someone at dinner tonight and see what you both remember.

  1. Can a black hole reach us from where it is?
  2. Why is it called “black”?
  3. Is a black hole actually looking for things to eat?

(Whenever you’re ready: 1. No, the nearest one is thousands of light-years away. 2. Because no light can escape it. 3. No, it’s just gravity, not hunger.)

Maybe tonight at dinner, ask each other one thing you learned that made something less scary.
