“Dad, what happens if you go inside a black hole?”

“Honestly, nobody knows for sure. That’s exactly what makes black holes so mysterious.”

“Even scientists don’t know?”

“We understand the edge pretty well, it’s called the ‘event horizon.’ Once you cross that boundary, gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.”

“Not even light gets out?”

“Right, that’s why it’s called a ‘black’ hole. It swallows even the brightest light, and never lets any of it back out.”

“So what happens if something goes in?”

“If a person went in, their feet would feel much stronger gravity than their head. That difference is so extreme, the body would stretch out long and thin, like a noodle. Scientists actually call this ‘spaghettification.’”

“Ugh, that’s really the name?”

“It really is! And after that, what’s at the very center, our current laws of physics can’t explain it. Scientists just call that point the ‘singularity,’ which basically means we don’t fully understand it yet.”

“So is a black hole the one true mystery left in the universe?”

“One of the biggest, yes. But here’s the fun part, outside the event horizon, a black hole is really just an object with incredibly strong gravity. Earth or the Sun could theoretically become a black hole too, if they were squeezed down small enough.”

“Could we become a black hole?”

“Theoretically. But to turn Earth into one, you’d have to squeeze its current size down to about the size of a marble. There’s basically no chance of that happening naturally.”

“A black hole swallows even light itself, but nobody yet knows exactly what happens at its very deepest center.”

  1. What’s the boundary of a black hole called?
  2. Why can’t even light escape once you cross it?
  3. What’s the very center of a black hole called?

(Check when ready: 1. The event horizon. 2. Gravity is too strong. 3. The singularity, meaning we don’t fully understand it yet.)
