Every night, right before the lights go off, Yuna’s eyes find the same spot on her solar-system blanket, the planet with the ring around it.

“Mom. Why does Saturn have a hula hoop?”

Her mom smiles, pulling the blanket up a little higher. “That’s not really a hula hoop. Those are rings, made of ice.”

“Ice? Like, ice cubes?”

“Kind of, yeah, but tiny. Millions and millions of little ice chunks, some as small as sugar grains, some as big as a house, all circling around Saturn together.”

“Millions?”

“Probably way more than that, honestly. Nobody’s actually counted.”

“Why don’t they just fall down onto Saturn?”

“Same reason the moon doesn’t fall onto us. They’re moving fast enough that they just… keep circling, instead of falling.”

“Do other planets have rings too?”

“A few, actually. But Saturn’s are the easiest to see, because they’re so huge. If you stretched them out flat, they’d almost reach from Earth to the Moon.”

“THAT big?”

“That big. But here’s the strange part, they’re also incredibly thin. If Saturn were the size of your blanket here, the rings would be thinner than a sheet of paper.”

Yuna goes quiet, turning that over. “So it’s just… ice. Going around and around. Forever?”

“Pretty much. Just ice, going around and around.”

She traces the ring on the blanket once more with her finger, then finally lets her eyes close. Some nights, her mom thinks, the universe doesn’t need any embellishing. The true version is strange enough all on its own.

Now It’s Your Turn

Find someone to tuck in tonight and see what you both remember.

  1. What are Saturn’s rings actually made of?
  2. Why don’t the ring pieces just fall onto Saturn?
  3. If you stretched the rings out flat, about how far would they reach?

(Whenever you’re ready: 1. Countless chunks of ice and rock. 2. They’re moving fast enough to keep circling instead of falling. 3. Almost as far as Earth to the Moon.)

Maybe tonight, before the lights go off, find your own something worth tracing with a finger.
